Nebraska State Senator Kathleen Kauth was the guest speaker at the Business and Professional People for Life luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 30.
Kauth was at the center of a maelstrom in the unicameral last year surrounding her Let Them Grow act, which restricts sex change treatments for minor children in Nebraska. The capitol was overrun with raucous protestors during the proceedings, who dropped used tampons on legislators, stuffed a severed deer head into a garbage can, and even tried driving a car into the Capitol building itself, little of which were mentioned in media covering the session. State senators Megan Hunt and Machaela Cavanaugh also made waves with some theatrics during their filibuster of the bill, the latter going viral on Twitter (now X) with a minute-long chant that brought laughs and derision from conservative influencers.
In the end, the Kauth believes the theatrics only helped her side. “Megan and Michaela’s temper tantrums are what got that bill passed,” Kauth said. “They brought attention to it in ways I couldn’t.”
An amendment to Kauth’s bill also enacted a 13-week ban on abortion procedures, which opponents are now trying to repeal. Kauth expects pro-abortion lobbyists to bring in $10 million for a paid signature-gathering campaign to put repeal of the ban.
I asked Sen. Kauth what pro-life citizens could do to counter the effort. ‘Talk to your neighbors,” she said. “Tell them, ‘I disagree.’ … and if they sign the petition, tell them they can change their mind.”
