Don Kleine speaks on crime, announces re-election bid for 2026

Don Kleine spoke at the Pachyderm Luncheon in Omaha today, where he announced that he intended to run for a sixth term as Douglas County Attorney in 2026.

At the event, Kleine discussed a surge in violent juvenile crime, including a large-scale retail theft operation involving millions in stolen goods and a case where seven teens broke into a gun store in Nebraska City, stole multiple cars, and murdered an Uber driver.

He also spoke about challenging cases prosecuted by the County Attorney’s Office. In two heartbreaking incidents, a three-year-old and a six-year-old were shot and killed after accessing loaded guns.

During Q&A, former Lt. Gov. John Nelson asked Kleine to weigh in on the case of a Hannah Dugan, a Milwaukee judge who is charged with helping an illegal immigrant evade authorities, and the outrage from the left over her arrest.

“The outrage should be about a judge acting in the way that she did, helping somebody get away,” Kleine said. “She’s doing exactly the opposite of what a judge should do. She’s not upholding the law when she’s helping somebody abscond. … It’s a sad day, when I see people who are supposed to be doing their job as judges, violating the law themselves.”
