Veteran’s Day Parade with Ben Sasse

I was recruited by both Ian Swanson and Derek Oden of the DCRP to walk in a Veterans’ Day Parade with Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse. Grammy was able to give us a ride to Olde Town Bellevue, where we met up with the rest of the Sasse team along Mission Street prior to the parade. Don Bacon’s crew was also on hand (sans Bacon), and I couldn’t help but notice far more in attendance with his team along the parade route. (Democrat Carol Blood was also there.)

The parade began while Sasse still wasn’t in our midst, but then as we walked along, he somehow somehow came out of nowhere and began walking alongside us. I let Hannah ride in our little wagon, and she enjoyed tossing candy to some of the kids lining the streets. As she told me later, “everyone was so happy to see me.”

The whole route was only around one kilometer in length, so it was over fairly quickly. Most people seemed happy to greet Sasse, though at least one person along the side refused to shake his hand when he held it out. Sasse stuck around for just long enough for a photo or two but then seemed to vanish just as quickly as he’d appeared earlier.

Hannah and I walked on back along the route back, where Grammy was stationed outside the Dairy Queen, watching the rest of the parade pass by along the way. Once it was over, we got some ice cream together before heading home.
