Pillen speaks of budget cuts, property taxes at Pachyderm Luncheon

The big news from Gov. Jim Pillen yesterday was that he signed an executive order opting Nebraska into a new federal school choice program passed under the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

Shortly before, Pillen spoke at the Pachyderm Luncheon in Omaha, addressing fiscal issues. He discussed finding $500 million in legislative spending cuts and tackling Nebraska’s tax challenges, which are hindering economic growth compared to neighboring states like South Dakota with lower taxes.

I asked Pillen about the chances of property tax reform in the next legislative session. He expressed optimism, stating he would approach the session with “extraordinary aggressiveness to solve the property tax crisis.”

However, he also voiced concerns about current ballot initiatives, warning they could create “chaos” and “an incredible amount of uncertainty” if passed.
