Nebraska’s second district Congressman Don Bacon spoke at the Business and Professional People for Life luncheon at the Garden Café in Omaha on Tuesday, the group’s first meeting since Roe v. Wade was overturned on June 27. Gov. Pete Ricketts called for a special session in the Nebraska legislature to enact a ban on abortions after 12 weeks, but the Unicameral still did not have enough votes to overcome a filibuster. Bacon sees hope on the horizon, however. “We have the ability to pick up four or five seats, which will be a game-changer,” he said. “That’s why this November is so critical at the local level.”
Nebraska’s second district is the “sixth most purple district out of 435,” according to Bacon with Republicans and Democrats split 38% to 36%, respectively. Bacon discussed the difficulty of getting reelected in such a narrowly-divided district, spending $1.5 million during the last few months leading up to election day every two years.
He took questions from the audience about abortion on the status of the Hyde Amendment and the Mexico City policy. He also took questions on gun control and term limits. He also commented on the FBI raid of Donald Trump’s personal residence at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. “they [the FBI] were hands-off on Hillary Clinton’s classified emails. They were hands off on Hunter Biden,” he said. “If the FBI does not have 100% solid justification, they’re in trouble … otherwise when we’re in the majority, those guys are going to sit in front of us every week, and we’re probably going to cut their funding.”
