Sarpy GOP vote to censure Republican members of Papillion La Vista school board

At the Sarpy County GOP meeting on Thursday night, members voted to censure the Republican members of Papillion La Vista school board — Lowell “Skip” Bailey, Marcus Madler, Brian Lodes, and Valerie Fisher.

The censure motion cited specific instances of pornographic material being allowed in Papillion La Vista schools, One example was the book, All Boys Aren’t Blue, a graphic excerpt from which was read during a board meeting on March 27, 2023. In late 2023, the board appointed Lisa Wood, who the censure motion called “an entrenched Democrat bureaucrat,” to replace Brittany Holtmeyer, a conservative board member who resigned due to “the stress of political opposition” after bringing up these controversial books.

“We saw how they treated [Holtmeyer], because they were hurting her health and her mental well-being” said one Sarpy GOP member. “These people took part in that. They deserve our censure.”

Linda Vermooten, a candidate for the Nebraska State Board of Education (District 2), spoke on behalf of the censure motion. “It is about time that we took a stand together as a party to protect the children,” she said. “If we do nothing, we are complicit with that board. I have sat before that board. I’ve testified to them about the long-term impact of pornography. They are not ignorant of what they are doing deliberately to our children, and I think this goes a long way for us as a body to say ‘enough.'”

Other guest speakers preceding the censure motion were Tiffany Carter (educatingparents.org) and member Ruth Bennett, both of whom spoke on sexually explicit content in K-12 schools.

Members voted 94 out of 97 to approve the motion to censure, with 2 opposed and 1 abstaining.
