Ron & Casey DeSantis make campaign stop in Council Bluffs

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his wife Casey paid a visit to Council Bluffs on Wednesday, one of their four stops that day to kick off his “Great American Comeback” tour and 2024 Presidential Campaign, which also included stops in Sioux City, Pella, and Cedar Rapids.

DeSantis spoke to around 200-300 people at The Grass Wagon event center a block south of Broadway and 29th, some of whom left the building early due to the sweltering heat inside. DeSantis touted his record on Covid in Florida and taking on Disney over their political stance on sexual content in K-12 education. “People said, ‘look if Disney gets involved, the 800 pound gorilla … you’re not going to be able to withstand that,'” DeSantis said, “Well that may have been true in the past but with his sheriff in town, we stand our ground, we do what’s right.”

DeSantis also highlighted a $2.7 billion dollar tax package, which included eliminating sales tax on baby items. “We don’t have an income tax in Florida — y’all should try it sometime.” DeSantis also cited recent legislation that he had signed, which included bills to “kneecap” ESG (environmental social governance), which he said was “begging to discriminate against conservatives,” prohibiting land purchases by the Chinese Communist Party and related entities, as well as banning the use of a “Central Bank digital currency” in the state.

Gov. DeSantis’ wife Casey also spoke briefly to the audience, and both she and her husband stayed afterward to greet and get pictures with guests.
