Mike Friend (born October 4, 1961) represents District 7 on the Douglas County Board since 2020, chairing the Criminal Justice subcommittee and co-chairing the Finance and Budget subcommittee. A Creighton graduate (BA, Mass Communications, 1985), he worked in newspapers, technical writing at First National Bank of Omaha, and now owns an insurance agency with Farm Bureau Financial Services. Previously, he served in the Nebraska Legislature (2002-2010) and as the first Director of the State Office of Violence Prevention.
Mike Friend
Commissioner Michael Friend (born October 4, 1961) will provide an update on the Douglas County Board, followed by a Q&A session. Representing District 7 since his election in November 2020, Friend chairs the Criminal Justice subcommittee and co-chairs the Finance and Budget subcommittee. Born in Omaha, he graduated from Millard South High School (1980) and earned a BA in Mass Communications from Creighton University (1985). His career spans newspaper work, technical and business writing at First National Bank of Omaha, business development, fundraising, and now owning an insurance agency with Farm Bureau Financial Services.
Friend previously served in the Nebraska Legislature (2002–2010) for District 10, chairing the Urban Affairs Committee, and was appointed by Governor Dave Heineman as the first Director of the State Office of Violence Prevention. He and his wife, Jacqueline, a licensed insurance agent, raised four children: Megan (30), Andrew (28, 1st LT in the U.S. Army), Elizabeth (25, Speech Pathologist), and Caroline (22, Graphic Artist). Friend has served on boards including the Omaha Summer Arts Festival (2005–2006), Greater Omaha YMCA Youth Advisory Council (2006–2007), and as President of the Burke High School Gridiron Club (2009–2011).
